Custom plastic display boxes built in clear cast acrylic — an open five-panel countertop box, a three-layer tiered display box, and a compartmented sample presentation box

Plastic Display Boxes

The plastic that display boxes should be built from is cast acrylic — here's why, and here's what we build.

A plastic display box is a rigid, transparent box that presents product on a counter, shelf, or sales desk — and the plastic it's built from decides whether it still looks sellable after a year on the floor. Wetop Acrylic manufactures custom plastic display boxes in cast acrylic (PMMA): the clear plastic that transmits about 92% of visible light, resists scratching, holds clarity for 5+ years indoors, and cuts to any dimension. We build three core formats — open five-panel countertop boxes, multi-layer tiered display boxes, and compartmented sample presentation boxes — plus fully custom display box builds. If you're comparing plastics first, the material table below gives the honest tradeoffs. MOQ 100 pieces per design, samples in 3–5 days.

Display Box Formats at a Glance

Plastic display boxes come in four working formats: open five-panel boxes that sit on a counter with the top or front open for access, multi-layer tiered boxes that step product upward inside one footprint, sample presentation boxes with fitted compartments that travel to the buyer, and fully custom display box builds sized to a specific program. All four ship at an MOQ of 100 pieces per design, with a production sample in 3–5 days. The reference below shows the typical range for each — every box is custom-built, so your final dimensions are engineered to your spec.

Display Box, Clear Box, or Display Case?

Three product families overlap in this search, and ordering the wrong one is the most common spec mistake we catch at quote stage. A display box merchandises product that gets restocked and sold — open access and tiers matter. A clear box is a general-purpose see-through container for storage, gifting, and packaging — the lid and the fill-and-empty cycle matter. A display case protects one item long-term under a fitted cover — dust sealing and a base matter. All three are built from the same cast acrylic; the difference is the job.

Which Plastic for a Display Box?

Four plastics show up in display boxes: cast acrylic (PMMA), polystyrene, PET/PETG, and polycarbonate. Cast acrylic is the right choice for almost every retail and presentation use — it transmits about 92% of visible light, holds clarity for 5+ years indoors, resists scratching better than PET or polycarbonate, and cuts and polishes to custom dimensions. Polystyrene is the cheapest and the most disposable: brittle, quick to scratch and haze, sold in molded stock sizes. PET/PETG resists shattering in thin walls but loses edge clarity at the polish step. Polycarbonate is nearly unbreakable but scratches easily and yellows under retail lighting. If the box's job is to make product look good for more than a season, cast acrylic wins.

What Affects Plastic Display Box Pricing?

Custom display box pricing runs on five drivers: box size, wall thickness, format complexity, branding method, and order quantity. A 3mm open five-panel countertop box costs a fraction of a 6mm four-tier unit with printed riser faces. We don't sell from a catalog, so instead of fixed prices, here's how each driver moves the number — and how the same box prices at 50, 500, and 5,000 pieces.

Box Size

Larger boxes use more acrylic and more polishing time. A 10cm countertop cube costs a fraction of a 45cm multi-layer unit.

Wall Thickness

A 6mm box uses roughly twice the material of a 3mm box the same size. Small open boxes run 3mm; tiered and load-bearing builds need 5–6mm.

Format Complexity

Five bonded panels is the baseline. Each tier, divider, compartment insert, or hinged lid adds cutting and assembly steps.

Branding Method

A blank box is cheapest. Silk-screen adds a setup fee plus per-unit cost, UV print adds per-unit cost, and metallic or specialty finishes need sample validation.

Order Quantity

Setup cost — cutting program, print screens, polishing changeover — spreads across every piece. The steepest per-unit drop sits between 50 and a few hundred.

Quantity frameWhat dominates the unit priceWhat to optimize
100 pieces (production MOQ)Setup — the cutting program, print screen, and changeover are divided by only 50 unitsSimplify the build: fewer artwork versions, standard thickness, blank or single-color print
500 piecesThe transition zone — setup is mostly absorbed, material and labor take over, and the steepest per-unit savings have already landedThis is where most retail programs order; lock the spec at sample stage and let the volume work
5,000 piecesMaterial and freight — the box's cubic volume in the carton starts to matter as much as the acrylic in itNest or flat-pack where the design allows, and quote sea freight early; packing density is your second unit price

As an indicative guide only, simple open five-panel countertop boxes often land around $4–$15/unit FOB Shenzhen at volume; multi-layer tiered display boxes around $12–$45/unit; and compartmented sample presentation boxes with inserts around $20–$60/unit. These are rough ranges that shift with size, thickness, branding, and quantity — not quotes. Send your spec and target quantities and we return exact numbers at every tier, within 24 hours.

Why Buyers Route Display Box Programs to Wetop

Buyers bring display box programs to Wetop for three reasons: every box is fabricated to spec rather than pulled from a mold catalog, multi-design programs run as one pooled production batch with one quality standard, and the factory has been doing exactly this since 2008 — 2,000+ custom projects, ISO 9001 certified, 100% inspection on every piece that ships.

Fabricated, Not Molded

Polystyrene and PET display boxes come out of molds in fixed sizes — your product fits or it doesn't. We cut, bond, and polish cast acrylic to your drawing on 8 laser cutters and 4 CNC machines, so the box fits the product, the counter, and the planogram exactly. No tooling fees at any quantity.

Programs, Not Isolated Orders

A launch usually needs more than one box — a counter unit, a tiered display, a sample case. We pool your designs into one production program: same acrylic batch, same finish spec, one 100-piece MOQ per design, delivered together so every retailer and rep gets a matched set.

Sample-to-Production Consistency

You approve a physical sample in 3–5 days; bulk production matches it under 100% inspection — seam quality, edge polish, print placement checked on every box. Production runs 15–20 days from our 5,000 m² Shenzhen facility, shipping FOB Shenzhen with CIF and DDP available.

Who Orders Plastic Display Boxes?

Plastic display boxes are ordered by retail and CPG brands merchandising at the counter, cosmetics brands tiering a shade range, sales teams carrying compartmented sample cases, collectibles retailers stepping product on multi-layer units, food and bakery counters, and trade show exhibitors. What they share: the box is the product's stage, so they specify cast acrylic for the clarity and scratch resistance that molded plastics can't hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a plastic display box the same as an acrylic display box?

Usually, yes. Acrylic (PMMA) is a plastic — the rigid, optically clear one that display boxes are built from when they need to look good and last. When buyers search for a plastic display box, most are comparing it against glass or picturing a generic clear box; what they end up specifying is almost always cast acrylic, because polystyrene and PET boxes are molded stock formats that scratch, haze, and can't be built to your dimensions. Wetop builds custom plastic display boxes in cast acrylic: any size, polished edges, MOQ 100 pieces, samples in 3–5 days.

Which plastic is best for a display box?

Cast acrylic, for almost every retail and presentation use. It transmits about 92% of visible light, holds clarity for 5+ years indoors, resists scratching better than polycarbonate or PET, and cuts and polishes cleanly to custom dimensions. Polystyrene is the cheapest but brittle and quick to haze — it suits short-life disposable packaging, not display. PET/PETG resists shattering in thin walls but loses edge clarity when polished. Polycarbonate is the impact champion but scratches easily and yellows under retail lighting. If the box exists to present something, cast acrylic is the right plastic.

What wall thickness does a plastic display box need?

It scales with box size and load. Small countertop display boxes up to roughly 15cm per side hold their shape in 3mm (1/8") cast acrylic. Mid-size boxes of 15–25cm per side step up to 5mm (3/16"). Large display boxes 30cm and up, multi-layer units, and anything load-bearing need 6mm (1/4") or thicker so the walls stay rigid and the shelves don't bow. Send us your dimensions and what the box will hold — we confirm the right thickness with your quote. Our acrylic box wall thickness guide covers the full logic.

Is the MOQ 100 per design, and can I pool several designs into one program?

The 100-piece MOQ is per design — per unique size, shape, and artwork combination — because each design carries its own setup: cutting program, print screen, polishing changeover. What we can do is run several display-box designs as one production program instead of isolated orders. If your line needs an open countertop box, a multi-layer unit, and a sample presentation box built with the same material and finish, we schedule them together so a multi-design launch isn't penalized for splitting its volume. Send the full list of designs and quantities and we quote the program as a whole.

What print and branding options are available on a display box?

Four methods, each with a different fit. Silk-screen printing suits flat, solid-color logos and is economical at volume. UV printing handles full-color, gradient, and photographic artwork directly on the acrylic. Laser engraving gives a permanent frosted mark that catches light on clear walls. Second-surface printing — artwork printed behind the acrylic face — protects detailed graphics from handling wear. Note that fine gradients don't screen-print well, and metallic gold effects need separate layer files and sample validation, so specialty finishes can price differently from standard color. We mock up placement before production so you approve exactly what prints.

Can you quote 50, 500, and 5,000 pieces of the same display box?

Yes — tiered quotes are standard, and we recommend asking for one. At the 100-piece production floor, setup has its largest per-unit share. The steepest drop comes between 100 and a few hundred pieces as cutting, print setup, and polishing changeover spread across more boxes. By 5,000 pieces, material and freight dominate. Send your dimensions, wall thickness, lid format, and print details, and we return the tiers in one table within 24 hours.

What is a multi-layer display box?

A multi-layer display box is a tiered acrylic unit — usually 2 to 4 stepped or stacked levels inside one footprint — that presents more product in the same counter space. Each layer is a bonded shelf or stepped platform, so small items at the back sit higher and stay visible. We build them with 5mm or 6mm walls depending on footprint and load, with open fronts for shopper access or enclosed sides for dust control. Typical uses: cosmetics tiers, collectible and figurine walls, jewelry steps, and sample presentation trays for sales teams.

I need a lidded case to protect one item long-term — is this the right page?

Probably not — that's a display case, not a display box. A display box presents product that gets restocked, handled, and sold: open fronts, tiers, and access matter. A display case protects a single item under a fitted cover on a shelf: a base, a lift-off lid, and dust sealing matter. For lidded and enclosed builds sized to one object, see our acrylic display cases. If you're weighing the two formats, our guide comparing a clear acrylic box against a lidded display case walks through the decision factors.

Can a display box be frosted, colored, or mixed instead of fully clear?

Yes. Clear cast acrylic is the default because the product is the point, but we regularly build display boxes with a frosted base that hides counter clutter, colored riser faces matched to a brand palette, or a mirrored back panel that doubles the product's presence. Any panel in the build can carry a different finish — a clear body with a frosted base is the most requested mix. Colored acrylic can be matched to a Pantone reference; exact-match custom tinting carries sheet minimums, and we tell you in the quote which method your color uses.

Are your display boxes safe for food counters?

For bakery and confectionery counters, acrylic can be specified in a food-contact grade, and we build to that grade when your use requires it — tell us up front that food touches the box. Construction matters too: for food service we recommend polished, easy-wipe surfaces and formats without deep unreachable corners. Note that a standard bonded display box is not engineered as a washable liquid-tight vessel; for dry baked goods, wrapped confectionery, and packaged product, a standard food-contact build is the right spec.
