Top Loader Sizes: 35pt to 360pt and What Fits
The pt number on a top loader or magnetic holder is the thickest card it takes. Measure the card, pick the holder, then size any display around the holder.

This guide converts every common holder rating to millimeters and covers what changes when a top loader, a magnetic holder and a graded slab share one display.
Key Takeaways
- A pt rating is thousandths of an inch: a 35pt holder takes cards up to 0.035 in (0.89 mm), a 55pt holder up to 1.40 mm and a 130pt holder up to 3.30 mm.
- A regular top loader is 3 × 4 in (76.2 × 101.6 mm) on the outside and holds a standard 2.5 × 3.5 in card up to 35pt.
- Measure the card with calipers and choose the smallest rating at or above the reading. Base cards go in 35pt; thick chrome, relic and patch cards need 55pt and up.
- The pt number describes the card, not the holder. A display slot is sized from the measured outside of the holder plus about 0.5 mm of total clearance.
- One stand can take top loaders and graded slabs if each slot is cut for its own holder. We build acrylic stands, cases and premium magnetic or screw-down acrylic holders; we do not make PVC top loaders, penny sleeves or card savers.

Top loader sizes in one chart
Top loader sizes are named in points (pt), and one point is a thousandth of an inch.1 The rating is the thickest card the holder takes, so a 35pt top loader fits cards up to 0.035 in, or 0.89 mm. A regular top loader is 3 × 4 inches on the outside and is made for 2.5 × 3.5 inch standard cards.2
The 2.5 × 3.5 inch card has been the basic sports card format since Topps settled on it in 1957,3 which is why most holders share one face size and differ only in depth. The chart converts each common rating to millimeters and lists the card stock the rating usually serves.
| Holder rating | Card thickness it takes (in) | Card thickness it takes (mm) | Typical cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23pt | 0.023 | 0.58 | Thin or older stock |
| 35pt | 0.035 | 0.89 | Standard base cards |
| 55pt | 0.055 | 1.40 | Chrome and thicker stock |
| 75pt | 0.075 | 1.91 | Thick autograph and memorabilia cards |
| 100pt | 0.100 | 2.54 | Patch and relic cards |
| 130pt | 0.130 | 3.30 | Thick patch autographs |
| 180pt | 0.180 | 4.57 | Very thick memorabilia cards |
| 260pt | 0.260 | 6.60 | Oversize relic pieces |
| 360pt | 0.360 | 9.14 | The thickest relic cards |
The millimeter column is the inch value times 25.4. The “typical cards” column is a starting point, not a rule. Card makers vary stock thickness within one product line, so the measured card decides the holder.
How to pick a size: measure, then round up
Measure the card with calipers at the thickest point, including any patch or embedded piece. Pick the smallest holder rating at or above that reading. A card that needs force to slide in, or that bows the holder, needs the next size up, because a tight fit scuffs edges and corners every time the card goes in or out.
A 35pt top loader suits ordinary base cards and most game cards in a penny sleeve. Thicker chrome cards and many autographs move to 55pt or 75pt. Patch and relic cards start around 100pt and climb to 180pt and above.1 Reading the pack label and the card’s measured thickness side by side avoids most fit problems.
The same logic holds for magnetic holders. Ultra PRO’s ONE-TOUCH range runs 23, 35, 55, 75, 100, 130, 180, 200, 260 and 360pt, for standard 2.5 × 3.5 inch cards,4 and other brands publish similar ladders. A holder that is too deep lets the card slide and rattle; one that is too shallow presses on the card face.
35pt vs 55pt: which one you need
Use 35pt for standard base cards and 55pt for thicker cards. The difference is 0.020 in, about half a millimeter, and it decides whether a thick card slides in freely or catches its corners. A 55pt top loader is also slightly thicker on the outside, which changes the slot width of any stand built for it.
Mixed collections often hold both. A card shop that sells base cards in 35pt and chrome singles in 55pt has two holder thicknesses on one counter. That is the first thing a display has to account for.
Top loader, magnetic holder and graded slab are three different objects
A top loader is a thin, rigid PVC sleeve open at one end. A magnetic holder is two thick plates with a recess for the card and magnets that close it. A graded slab is a sealed case from a grading company, with a label above the card. All three can carry the same card, but their outside dimensions differ widely.
| Holder | Construction | Outside size | What sets its thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top loader | Rigid PVC sleeve, open top | About 3 × 4 in for the regular size | The pt rating plus two thin walls |
| Magnetic holder | Two plates with a card recess and magnets | Varies by brand and rating | Plate thickness, much larger than the pt rating |
| Graded slab | Sealed hard case with a grader’s label | About 81 × 136 × 6.5 mm for a PSA slab | The grading company’s holder design |
Slab sizes differ by grader. A PSA slab measures about 81 × 136 × 6.5 mm and a BGS slab is about 8 mm thick. The PSA slab dimensions guide compares PSA, BGS, SGC and CGC side by side.
For a display buyer, the pt rating describes the card inside, not the outside of the holder. A 35pt magnetic holder is far thicker than 0.89 mm. Measure the holder itself before sizing any slot or recess around it.
Sizing a display slot for each holder
Cut a display slot from the measured outside of the holder, then add about 0.5 mm of total clearance. That is the clearance we use on graded card display cases: enough to seat and lift the holder freely, tight enough that it does not lean or rattle in transit.
Holder batches vary slightly, and two brands rated at the same pt can differ on the outside. For that reason we cut slots from a holder the buyer mails in, or from caliper readings the buyer sends, and check the fit on the paid sample before any production run. A stand built from a size printed on a pack can end up a fraction of a millimeter too tight.
Slot depth matters too. A top loader stands taller than a slab’s card window, so a slot deep enough to hold a slab steady may cover the bottom of a card in a top loader. The drawing records slot width, depth and the visible area for each holder type.
One stand for top loaders and slabs
A single acrylic stand can carry top loaders, magnetic holders and graded slabs if each slot is cut for its own holder. A mixed stand has slots of different widths side by side, and often a different depth for each. Label the positions on the drawing so the shop staff know which holder goes where.
A common request is a counter stand that holds one slab and a few top-loaded singles beside it, or a stand that swaps between the two. Swapping holders in the same slot does not work well. A slot sized for a 6.5 mm slab lets a top loader fall forward, and a slot sized for a top loader will not take a slab. Separate slots, or a removable insert per holder type, are the reliable options.
What we make, and what we do not
We do not make PVC top loaders, penny sleeves or card savers. These are mass-produced in PVC or polypropylene, and that is not what we build. We make the premium version: thick polished acrylic card holders with a magnetic or screw-down closure, a logo or a printed or colored backing, and an optional UV-filtering sheet, from 100 pieces per design. We also build the displays around holders and slabs: card stands, multi-slot blocks, graded card display cases and trading card display cases, cut to the holder or card you send. Production starts at 100 pieces per design.
Ordering follows our standard steps:
- Send the holders the stand must carry, or caliper readings for each, plus slot count, quantity per design and destination.
- Approve the drawing. A paid sample costs USD 200–500 depending on complexity, takes 3–5 days, is paid separately and is never credited to production.
- Check the fit of every holder type on the sample.
- Production takes 15–20 days after sample approval, with 100% inspection against the approved sample.
The published reference for a standard graded-card case is $5.90 per unit at 100+ pieces, FOB Shenzhen. Mixed slots, UV-filtering acrylic, printed backgrounds and magnetic fronts are quoted from your drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a standard top loader?
A regular top loader measures 3 × 4 inches (76.2 × 101.6 mm) on the outside and is made for 2.5 × 3.5 inch (63.5 × 88.9 mm) standard cards up to 35pt thick. Taller, booklet and thick-card versions exist, so check the pack label before you size anything around it.
What is the difference between 35pt and 55pt top loaders?
A 35pt top loader takes cards up to 0.035 in (0.89 mm) thick, which covers ordinary base cards. A 55pt top loader takes cards up to 0.055 in (1.40 mm), for thicker chrome stock and some memorabilia cards. If a card bows the holder or needs force to slide in, go up one size.
What magnetic card holder sizes are there?
Ultra PRO's ONE-TOUCH line lists 23, 35, 55, 75, 100, 130, 180, 200, 260 and 360pt. The number matches the card thickness the holder accepts. The outside thickness of a magnetic holder is much larger than its rating and varies by brand, so measure one before ordering a stand.
Can one acrylic stand hold both top loaders and graded slabs?
Yes, if every slot is cut for the holder it will carry. A top loader, a magnetic holder and a PSA slab differ in thickness and height, so a mixed stand gets slots of different widths. Send one of each holder, or measured dimensions, and approve the fit on the paid sample.
Do you make top loaders?
No. Standard top loaders, penny sleeves and card savers are mass-produced in PVC or polypropylene, and that is not what we build. We make premium thick acrylic card holders, magnetic or screw-down with a logo or printed backing, plus acrylic card stands, multi-slot blocks and graded card cases to your drawing, from 100 pieces per design. The published reference for a standard graded-card case is $5.90 per unit at 100+ pieces, FOB Shenzhen.
