Find Your Mahjong Tile Set Format

Custom acrylic mahjong tile sets come in six core formats: the NMJL 152-tile American standard, the 160-tile expanded American set with spare Jokers and blank replacement tiles, the 144-tile traditional Chinese set, multi-colorway boutique production runs locked against approved samples, single-color premium 4-layer laminated tiers for the collector market, and full brand-edition OEM runs produced from the buyer's outlined vector artwork. Every format is cast PMMA in three standard tile bodies — 30 × 23 × 13 mm compact, 32 × 23 × 13 mm mid, 36 × 25 × 15 mm full-size, custom sizes on request — with 0.3 mm CNC chamfered edges, in colors matched from the in-stock sheet range to the buyer's Pantone or hex target.

What Is a Custom Acrylic Mahjong Tile Set?

A custom acrylic mahjong tile set is a 144 to 160-tile game set in cast PMMA, engraved and color-finished to a brand's exact specification — substrate, color, character engraving method, Joker artwork, edge geometry, and packaging integration — manufactured as a paired SKU with rack-and-pusher accessories, mat, and dice. Unlike a melamine import set, a custom acrylic set holds optical clarity past five years under indoor lounge LED dwell, takes brand artwork locked against an approved physical sample, and ships ISTA 3A drop-test certified.

Core Specifications — Standard & Customizable

The table below shows our production-tier defaults plus the customizable axes on every order. The standards reflect what we ship by default if a buyer specifies only "152-tile NMJL American mahjong, cast acrylic, custom logo." The customizable column shows where buyers commonly spec up — boutique colorways, 4-layer laminated tile body, custom Joker artwork, branded packaging integration.

Every spec listed below is auditable in the production drawing we send with your quote. The 0.3 mm chamfer tolerance, the approved-sample color standard, and the ISTA 3A drop-test are line items on the QC sheet for every batch, not aspirational claims.

For the engineering rationale behind every column — why cast PMMA beats extruded at sub-30 mm tile parts, why 0.3 mm chamfer changes the table hand-feel, how color stays consistent across a 12-colorway run — see the published custom acrylic mahjong tiles spec guide and the companion mahjong tile engraving comparison guide.

Anatomy of a Production-Grade Acrylic Mahjong Tile

A production-grade acrylic mahjong tile is a five-layer composite: a 6 mm cast PMMA body with polished face, a 0.3 mm laser-etched character channel recessed into the body, a 0.05 mm UV-printed suit color stack over the etched character with a clear-coat seal, a 0.3 mm CNC chamfered edge on all four sides, and an optional 4-layer laminated translucent middle layer for the collector tier. Every dimension is auditable in the production drawing.

Cross-section: 13 mm cast PMMA body, 0.3 mm laser-etched character channel, 0.05 mm UV-printed suit overlay, 0.3 mm CNC-chamfered edges. The chamfer is the spec most acrylic shops skip and the one that separates a tile that feels right in the hand from one that buyers report as low-grade or sharp.

Customization Details — Build Your Perfect Set

Three customization axes drive a custom mahjong tile set spec: the tile itself (substrate, color, layers, geometry), the marking and artwork (characters, suit colors, brand integration, Jokers), and the packaging and presentation (gift box, travel case, accessory bundle, retail unit-pack). Each axis is independently spec-able — buyers can mix a stock 152-tile NMJL composition with a fully custom Joker artwork and a wooden gift-box presentation, or run a 4-layer laminated premium tile with stock packaging.

Why Choose Wetop for Custom Acrylic Mahjong Sets

Eight reasons buyers consolidate their mahjong tile sourcing with Wetop: durability validated against tile-on-tile click load, the premium hand-feel that 0.3 mm chamfer delivers, character markings that physically cannot wear off, an honest sample-locked color model built on the in-stock sheet range, speed-to-CES production timing that 80-day shops cannot quote on, MOQ 50 that serves brand-newcomers, eco-friendly recyclable cast PMMA with documented chemistry, and retail-ready packaging integration with ISTA 3A drop-test sign-off.

Unmatched Durability

Cast PMMA Izod impact strength (~0.4 ft-lb/in per industry data) sits well above tile-on-tile click load — the engraved character is recessed below the play surface so it can't wear off. Heat deflection >180°F covers worst-case shipping container conditions. The 0.3 mm CNC chamfer distributes corner impact load and prevents the micro-chip pattern that shows up by month 4 on square-edged tiles.

Premium Hand-Feel

30 × 23 × 13 mm tile body, ~10.5 g weight average — heavier than melamine, lighter than bone. The 0.3 mm CNC-chamfered edge is what buyers describe as 'feels right' on the table. Diamond-polished face reads as glass, not as a frosted saw cut.

Crystal-Clear Markings

Laser-etched character at 0.3 mm channel depth recesses into the tile body — the character is in the acrylic, not on it, so it cannot wear off. Clear-coat seal over UV-printed suit colors extends 'feel new' window past 5 years under indoor lounge LED dwell.

Full Branding Flexibility

Custom Joker artwork, brand logo on tile back, UV-printed serial numbers, holographic foil overlay — all from your outlined vector files. Colorways matched from the in-stock cast sheet range to your targets and locked against the approved physical sample, colorway after colorway.

Speed-to-CES

15-20 day production from sample sign-off. 3-day air freight on first-50-set rush for trade-show booth openers; sea freight balance for booth replenishment. We routinely hit CES-week and Mother's Day windows that 80-day production shops cannot quote on.

Brand-Newcomer Friendly

Fully custom mahjong tiles start at 50 sets, which gives emerging brands a practical first-run option. Higher quantities can be planned after the first approved design and packaging system are stable.

Eco-Friendly & Safe

Cast PMMA is type-7 plastic, recyclable through any commercial recycling stream. ASTM D5946 surface energy verified for ink adhesion (no plasticizer leach). Non-toxic, BPA-free, food-contact safe. Material datasheets available for buyers with chemistry-spec procurement requirements.

Retail & Gift Ready

Silicone-cradle insert + ISTA 3A drop-test sign-off on every production run. Custom unit-pack with brand artwork. FBA-ready inner carton dimensions. Wooden gift box and velvet-lined display case options for boutique gifting programs. Master carton holds 12-24 sets depending on insert spec.

Before you brief us, here are the reference documents we hand every custom mahjong buyer — all four download directly below. The spec worksheet covers the four spec axes (substrate, engraving, edge, color) at a depth that turns a generic "polished acrylic, 144 tiles, custom logo" brief into a quotable production drawing. The sample-request flowchart helps you choose between the $40 single-tile, the $180 12-tile color check, and the $300–500 full-set sample. The Pantone reference card and packaging insert spec sheet cover color targets and unit-pack detail. (No NDA template here by design — we no longer sign NDAs on mahjong projects; see the ordering policies.)

Quote Your Mahjong Tile Program
Risk referenceCheck four common specification pitfallsSubstrate, chamfer, latch and color acceptance

Four Common Specification Pitfalls on Custom Mahjong Tile Runs

The four spec mistakes that cause 80% of OEM mahjong tile project regressions are: extruded substrate on tile-scale parts (cost-driven shortcut that clouds the engraved character by month 8), skipped 0.3 mm chamfer (produces edge micro-chips by month 4 of play), magnetic-only travel-case latch (fails by month 14 of freight cycling), and no written color-acceptance standard on the production drawing (lets batch-2 drift visibly from batch-1). Each is preventable at the brief stage; each is expensive to remediate post-production.

Pitfall 1: Extruded Substrate

Extruded PMMA costs 18–24% less per raw sheet, but at tile-scale (sub-30 mm parts) the residual extrusion stress clouds the laser-etched character channel by month 8–12 of indoor lounge LED dwell. Cast PMMA holds optical clarity past five years. The full breakdown — including what an extruded-substrate regression looks like by month 12 — is in our tile spec guide §1.

Pitfall 2: Skipped Chamfer

A square-edged tile is a stress concentration. On tile-on-tile click, the impact load focuses at the corner and over thousands of plays produces visible micro-chips by month 4. The 0.3 mm CNC chamfer distributes the load and adds $0.10 to per-tile cost. Skipping it saves about $14 on a 144-tile set; including it is what separates a tile that buyers describe as feels right from one they call low-grade. See spec guide §3 for the chamfer-geometry engineering data.

Pitfall 3: Magnetic-Only Latch

Magnetic-only travel-case latches fail at month 14–18 of freight cycling. Magnetic + mechanical interlock latches survive 5,000+ open/close cycles. The cost premium is $1.20–1.80 per case — far below the cost of a single freight-loss return. Detailed latch-tier breakdown in the acrylic mahjong display case engineering guide.

Pitfall 4: Unspec'd Color Tolerance

Color drift between components and batches is the multi-colorway risk buyers actually see. We control it at the source: each colorway is cut from one reserved in-stock sheet lot for the whole run, and finished tiles are checked against the physical sample you approved — the sample, not a screen render or a Pantone number, is the acceptance standard. See spec guide §4.

Brief checklist note: write all four of these onto the production drawing during the quoting stage. The brief that says "polished acrylic, 144 tiles, custom logo" is the one that comes back as a returns dispute 18 months in. The brief that calls cast PMMA, 0.3 mm chamfer, combination latch, and an approved golden sample as the color standard is the one whose Year 5 sets still read premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the MOQ for a custom acrylic mahjong tile set?

Our production MOQ is 50 sets per design, sized for emerging mahjong brands, club programs, and corporate gift runs that cannot commit to a 300-set program. Fully custom tiles start at 50 sets with standard packaging and stock accessories. Accessory customization starts at 250 sets; custom packaging starts at 1,000 sets. A paid sample is available before production.

How long from brief to delivered sets?

Sample turn is 5–7 days against your tile dimensions and engraving spec. Production for a 200-set run is 15–20 days once the sample is approved. Sea freight from Shenzhen to the US west coast runs 14–18 days; air freight is 3 days. Total order-to-warehouse for a typical US buyer lands at 5–7 weeks. Multi-colorway runs add no casting lead time — every colorway is a sheet pick from the in-stock range, confirmed on the sample.

Can you produce sets that match the NMJL 152-tile and 160-tile American standards?

Yes. We ship both the 152-tile NMJL standard (suits + winds + dragons + flowers + 8 Jokers) and the 160-tile expanded set (adds 2 spare Jokers and 6 blank replacement tiles). 144-tile Chinese mahjong runs alongside on the same production line. The tile body size (30 × 23 × 13 mm standard) and engraving depth (0.3 mm laser channel) are constant across all three; only the suit composition and Joker count change.

What customization can you do on the tiles themselves?

The tiles themselves are fully custom from 50 sets per design; accessory customization starts at 250 sets and custom packaging at 1,000 sets. Options include solid or translucent cast PMMA, three standard tile sizes, custom sizes on request, laser-etched or UV-printed characters, laminated constructions, chamfered edges, and branded tile backs. We confirm the final material, geometry, artwork method, and tolerances on the paid sample before production.

Do you guarantee color register across a multi-colorway production run?

Color consistency inside a run is controlled by cutting each colorway from one reserved sheet lot and checking finished tiles against the physical sample you approved. What we do not promise is a 100% exact match to your Pantone reference: colors come from the in-stock cast sheet range, matched as the closest available sheet — the approved sample, not a Pantone number, is the production standard. That is the honest version of color control from sheet stock; a factory promising Pantone-exact from stock is describing a custom casting run.

What does a sample cost, and is the fee separate from production?

Three sample stages: a single-tile cast PMMA sample with your engraving method runs $40–$80 and ships in 5–7 days; a 12-tile color-register check for multi-colorway runs is $180–$320 and ships in 7 days; a full custom set sample runs $300–$500 including air freight and ships in 7–10 days. Sample fees are not credited to production — the engraving, color-register, and finishing labor behind a one-off custom sample far exceeds the fee we charge for it. The full-set sample is ISTA 3A drop-test certified before shipment so you can validate transit performance.

How many proof revisions are included before sample cut?

Three free proof revisions per round, working from your supplied artwork — we proof placement and production spec, never design or redraw the artwork itself. Each round includes a CAD drawing of the tile geometry plus a 3D render of one suit set in your specified colorway, with 24-hour mockup turnaround. Most buyers approve within one or two rounds because the first mockup already carries the specific spec choices — substrate, engraving depth, chamfer geometry, and the approved-sample color standard — rather than visual mood only.

What's the difference between cast PMMA and lower-cost acrylic options?

Cast PMMA is polymerized between glass plates over hours; extruded PMMA is pushed through a die in minutes. At tile-scale (sub-30 mm parts), the residual stress in extruded acrylic shows up as cloudy haze along the laser-etched character channel by month 8–12 of indoor lounge LED dwell. Cast holds optical clarity past five years. The cost delta at OEM volume is ~18–24% per tile, not the 50%+ that gets quoted on raw sheet pricing — because cast laser-cuts cleaner and drops a secondary polish step. The full breakdown is in our published tile spec guide.

What quality assurance and inspection terms do you offer?

100% visual inspection and a color check against your approved physical sample gate every batch before shipment approval, with ISTA 3A drop-test sign-off on the production run and QC photos before the cargo leaves the warehouse. On arrival you have a 7-day inspection window to validate the shipment against the approved master; transit damage or units that fail the approved spec are reviewed with photo evidence and remade. Custom production is not sold with a warranty period — the approved sample, not a time-based guarantee, is the acceptance standard.

How does Wetop's pricing compare to larger volume-tier mainland Chinese mahjong OEMs?

Our wedge is MOQ and lead time, not unit price. Volume-tier mainland China mahjong OEMs typically start at 300-set MOQ with 45–90 day production lead times. Wetop's floor is 50 sets at 15–20 day production. On unit cost we land in the same band (typical $47–58/set FOB Shenzhen across our published 50–500 set ladder); on flexibility we serve the brand-newcomer tier — emerging US mahjong brands launching a 50–500 set first run — that 300-set MOQ shops can't quote on at all. Once a brand graduates to volume we stay competitive on unit cost into the 2,000+ set range.

What payment terms and freight options do you offer?

Standard terms are a 30% deposit on PO confirmation, with the balance paid before shipment. T/T wire transfer is preferred; PayPal and Western Union are also accepted. FOB Shenzhen is the default, with CIF and DDP available by destination. If a production order must meet a trade-show or seasonal window, ask whether a partial air shipment is feasible.

Can you hand-paint the color fill, like vintage or heirloom sets?

No — and here is why we made that call. We engrave the pattern shape into the tile first, then UV print the color into the engraved recess. Because the color sits inside the recess rather than on top of the surface, repeated shuffling does not wear it off — and every tile in a 500-set run comes out identical, which hand paint-fill cannot guarantee. Hand-painting is too labor-intensive for consistent production quality at OEM volume, so we do not offer it. If the hand-painted look is the goal, the engrave-plus-UV-fill method reproduces it closely enough that most boutique brands who asked us this question went on to order it.

Do you make melamine, resin, or marble-pattern tiles?

No. We build layered cast acrylic (PMMA) tiles only — that is the material our engraving, UV-fill, and color-register processes are tuned for. We do not produce melamine or resin tiles, and we decline marble-pattern acrylic because the pattern consistency across a production run does not meet our QC standard. If a true melamine construction is a hard requirement, we are likely not the right factory — and we will tell you that on the first email rather than after a sample. Pearlescent and tortoise-shell layered acrylic backs, on the other hand, are available.

How do you protect our brand artwork and IP during the OEM workflow?

By standing practice, not paperwork: your artwork is used only for your production, never published, never reused, never offered to another buyer, and client designs never appear in our marketing. Effective August 25, 2026 we no longer sign NDAs on mahjong projects — the multi-partner production chain (materials, engraving, UV printing, accessories, packaging) makes a single-factory NDA unenforceable, and the manufacturing process is not customer IP. Your enforceable protection is a registered trademark or design patent in your market, which binds every factory. Full reasoning: ordering policies.

What should I look for in a custom mahjong tile manufacturer?

Five things separate a production-grade custom mahjong tile manufacturer from a trading company reselling stock tiles: substrate honesty (cast PMMA specified on the drawing, not "acrylic" as a catch-all that lets extruded slip in), an honest color model (a physical approved sample as the production standard, not a Pantone-exact promise no stock sheet can keep), NMJL format coverage (152 American, 160 expanded, 144 Chinese — with Joker artwork capability), an MOQ that fits your launch tier rather than forcing a 300-set commitment on an untested SKU, and packaging that ships ISTA 3A drop-test certified. Every one of those five is auditable in the production drawing before you commit.

Do you ship internationally and handle customs documentation?

Yes — we ship to 25+ countries with mahjong runs landing primarily in US buyers' warehouses, alongside UK, Australia, and East Asia. DDP service handles the import customs documentation, duties, and last-mile delivery for buyers who don't want to manage the broker side. US HTS classification typically falls under heading 9504 (games) — confirm the exact code with your customs broker before filing. We pre-fill the commercial invoice, packing list, and certificate of origin; the buyer provides only the importer-of-record details. CE marking is not required for the US or UK; AS/NZS 8124 toy safety standard documentation available on request for Australian distributors.

Building a Mahjong Brand or Boutique Program?
