Start with one named custom specification

A custom mahjong tile manufacturer cost comparison starts with the same tile count, dimensions, artwork process, color route, accessories, packaging, quantity, and freight term. Without those inputs, two per-set numbers do not describe the same product.

A brand launching its own set is buying something else entirely: a design it owns, a tile spec it chose, a color standard its customers will photograph. American mahjong itself is standardized — 152 tiles under the National Mah Jongg League composition, played with racks¹² — so what a brand actually sells is execution: material, engraving, color, feel. This guide walks the FOB cost stack line by line so you can see where the money goes and which decisions move it. The real FOB cost stack

An FOB Shenzhen quote for a custom mahjong set stacks five blocks: material, machining and engraving, color and finishing, assembly and QC, and packaging — plus setup labor amortized across the run. FOB means the price covers everything through China export clearance; ocean freight, duty, and destination costs sit on the buyer’s side.

Reading the table top to bottom also shows the production sequence. The quote identifies the material batch, machining and engraving operations, color and cure route, assembly, inspection, and packaging. If a colorway must come from one material lot, write that control into the order rather than assuming it. Piece-by-piece inspection is included before packing, with the approved sample and order criteria controlling acceptance.

Two controls frame the stack. First, the quote names any programming, fixture, setup, color-development, sample, or tooling work required by the approved process. Second, FOB Shenzhen has a defined boundary: the quote states the manufacturing, packing, inland transport, and export-clearance scope; ocean freight, insurance, destination duty, brokerage, and last-mile delivery sit outside FOB. When a buyer wants one landed number instead, we quote DDP against the destination and shipment details.

Cast vs extruded acrylic: what the substrate does to cost

Custom mahjong tiles are quoted in cast acrylic, and the substrate choice is a cost line rather than a footnote. Cast and extruded PMMA use different production routes and can behave differently under machining, engraving, polishing, and printing. A lower sheet price does not establish a lower finished-part cost.

The material datasheet, actual grade, thickness, and process trial matter more than a generic cast-versus-extruded label.³⁴ Ask the supplier to name the sheet grade and approve the engraving, edge, print, and wear checks on the relevant physical sample. Any cost difference should be calculated from the finished specification, including scrap and rework, rather than from sheet price alone.

When comparing manufacturers, ask each quote to name the sheet grade, thickness, tile geometry, artwork process, finish, and approved sample. Different materials or processes should not be compared as the same specification.

Engraving plus UV fill vs surface printing

Engraving plus registered UV printing uses separate machining and printing operations. The approved drawing and sample must identify the channel geometry, print sequence, color target, face orientation, and wear check.

A surface-printed tile and an engraved tile carry different operation counts and approval questions. The quote should separate engraving coverage, UV-print coverage, registration, cure, and inspection. Our engraving method comparison covers the laser, CNC, and UV trade-offs in production detail.

Decoration cost also depends on coverage. A monogram on selected tiles and full-face artwork across all suits do not carry the same machining, print-registration, or inspection scope. The RFQ should quantify decorated faces and colors, and supply production-ready vector files with outlined fonts — redraw happens on the buyer’s side before files are accepted; we do not redraw or vectorize artwork.

One method we do not sell is hand paint-fill. The quote instead identifies the engraving and registered-print route that will be approved on the physical sample.

Tile count: what 152 vs 160 vs 166 does to the number

Tile count changes sheet use, artwork operations, inspection count, insert size, case size, and packed weight. The quote prices 152-, 160-, and 166-tile formats as named configurations rather than applying a universal percentage.

The buyer must name the required tile count and composition. A 152-tile American format, an expanded 160-tile format, and a 166-tile format do not share the same bill of materials, insert, case, or packed weight.

The second-order cost is dimensional. Eight or fourteen extra tiles enlarge the case footprint, the cradle insert, and the shipped weight per set — small per unit, real across 250 sets of sea freight. This is also where tile size multiplies against count: moving from a 30x23x13mm compact tile to a 36x25x15mm full-size tile raises per-tile material volume by about half, which lands harder on a 166-count set than a 152. Count and size decisions belong on the table at the same time, and the ordering guide’s spec worksheet forces exactly that conversation.

The published quantity ladder: 50, 100, 200, 250, 500

The ladder is a planning reference, not a promise that every configuration carries the same price. At 250 sets, accessory customization can be quoted; custom packaging joins at 1,000 sets. Programming, calibration, fixtures, color work, packaging, and inspection remain specification-dependent line items.

For a same-spec comparison, issue one brief to every supplier. State the complete tile count and composition; finished tile length, width, and thickness; acrylic grade and color route; artwork method and decorated faces; edge and surface finish; racks, pushers, dice, and other accessories; packaging construction; and production quantity. Attach the same vector artwork and reference files to each request. Ask the supplier to return the unit price, one-time charges, paid sample scope, production lead time, packing assumptions, carton data, and Incoterm in separate fields. If a line is absent, mark it unresolved instead of treating it as included.

The freight boundary needs the same discipline. FOB Shenzhen is not a delivered price: destination transport, import duty, brokerage, and last-mile delivery sit outside that boundary. A DDP comparison needs the destination postal code, delivery terms, shipment mode, and the same final packed specification. Do not compare an FOB unit price for standard packaging with a DDP price for a rigid gift box and call the difference a factory margin.

Approval criteria also affect the quoted work. Name the dimensional inspection points, color target and viewing condition, artwork registration check, edge and surface standard, piece count, accessory count, and packaging check. The relevant paid sample tier should answer the largest open risk: one engraved tile for artwork and edge review, 12 tiles for a color-range check, or a full set for complete configuration, packing, and play review. None of those samples substitutes for the production-order acceptance criteria.

Record every approved revision in the purchase order so later artwork or packaging changes remain visible.

Packaging tiers and the costs quotes hide

The complete budget adds three quote-specific lines to the production price: Pantone custom-color work, the chosen paid sample tier, and freight or duty beyond the named FOB boundary.

Sheet colors are matched from the in-stock range to your Pantone or hex target and approved on the physical sample — no per-color fees, no casting lead time. A single engraved tile sample is $40–80 and takes 5–7 days; a 12-tile color check is $180–320 and takes 7 days; a full-set sample is $300–500 including air freight and takes 7–10 days. Every sample tier is paid separately and never credited to production. Standard payment is a 30% deposit with the balance due before shipment.

The last comparison error is mixing payment and freight terms. A lower number may be EXW, exclude color development, or assume a different artwork route. Compare the same Incoterm, tile count, decoration method, packaging tier, and sample scope, then ask each supplier to itemize the boundary.
