## The brief that says "40 frames" and nothing else {#layout-first}

The typical art-program brief I see reads like this: "We need approximately 40 acrylic frames for our new office, sizes TBD, please quote." What it never contains is a gallery wall layout — which walls, how many frames per wall, what spacing, what centerline. Those five missing decisions are not styling details to settle after delivery; they determine the frame sizes, the hole positions, the hardware count, and ultimately the quote itself.

A gallery wall layout is the geometric plan for a group of frames on one wall: the arrangement pattern, the spacing between frames, and the height of the composition's center. ## The 57-inch centerline: the number that does the vertical math {#57-inch-rule}

Hang the center of the composition 57 inches from the floor. That is the gallery convention — Park West Gallery's hanging guidance states it plainly: display the artwork's center 57 inches from the floor, a height that roughly matches average standing eye level.[^parkwest] The rule's power for group walls is that it treats the entire arrangement as one artwork: compute the combined height of your grid or salon cluster, put its midpoint at 57 inches, and every row position falls out arithmetically.

Worked example, because the arithmetic is the point. A 3x4 grid of 16x20-inch portrait frames with 3-inch gaps stands 66 inches tall (three 20-inch rows plus two 3-inch gaps). Center at 57 inches: the grid runs from 24 inches to 90 inches off the floor — top row comfortably below a 9-foot ceiling, bottom row above chair rails and furniture. That one calculation, done at the drawing stage, is what lets a factory pre-drill 12 frames' standoff holes knowing they will land right.

Two disciplined exceptions. Where furniture owns the wall — a credenza, a lobby sofa — the furniture sets the bottom edge of the composition and the 57-inch center yields; a grid floating disconnected above a console reads worse than one anchored to it. And in seated environments (restaurants, waiting areas), eye level drops, so compositions drop with it. The rule is a default with reasons, not a law: know why you are deviating, and deviate by decision.

The grid is the corporate workhorse: it reads as one deliberate object, tolerates print swaps without rebalancing, and scales — the same 3x3 module repeats on every floor of a fit-out. Its discipline is total uniformity: one frame size, one orientation, gaps identical to the millimeter, which is precisely what makes it the most economical formula to fabricate and the fastest to install.

The salon hang is the character formula — the mixed-size cluster that makes a reception wall feel collected rather than specified. Its secret is that it is not freeform: sizes vary but the composition balances around the 57-inch centerline, gaps stay inside one chosen constant, and the outer silhouette approximates a clean rectangle. The procurement trick is building the "collected" look from three or four standard sizes rather than true one-offs — the visual variety survives, the cutting list does not explode.

The single axis owns circulation spaces. One horizontal datum — all frame centers at 57 inches — running the length of a corridor, frames marching at a constant gap. ## Spacing and sight lines: the numbers between the frames {#spacing-numbers}

Professional hanging guidance puts the gap between pieces at 3 to 6 inches.[^parkwest] The range is not indecision — it is a dial. Tight gaps (2-3 inches) fuse uniform frames into a single super-graphic, which is why grids run tight. Loose gaps (5-6 inches) let mixed sizes read individually, which is why salons run loose. The failure mode is not picking the wrong number; it is varying it, because the eye detects gap inconsistency faster than any other layout error.

Viewing distance tunes the dial. A corridor viewed from 1.5 meters tolerates — even rewards — tighter gaps and smaller frames; a lobby wall read from 8 meters needs larger frames and can carry wider gaps before the composition falls apart. My rule of thumb from walking client spaces: if viewers can step back to twice the composition's width, the layout will read as intended; if they cannot (narrow corridors), shrink the frames before you shrink the gaps.

Sight lines also decide the frame technology, which buyers rarely connect to layout. ## Size normalization: where a 40-frame program saves real money {#size-normalization}

Here is the procurement insight the decorating articles never mention: on a multi-wall program, normalizing frame sizes saves more than any discount negotiation. Forty frames in three standard sizes cost meaningfully less to fabricate, pack, and reorder than forty frames in nine bespoke sizes — and the walls look better, because repetition is what layout formulas are made of.

The mechanics are plain fabrication economics. Every distinct size is its own cutting program, its own standoff hole map, its own protective-film and carton spec, and its own line on every future reorder. Three sizes means three of everything, jigs reused across the run, cartons that stack uniformly in the container, and — the quiet benefit — a spare-stock strategy: order four extra of each of three sizes and any damaged frame on any wall has a replacement, which is impossible discipline across nine one-offs. Standard print sizes make normalization painless: 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36 inches cover grid modules, salon variety, and statement pieces respectively, and every print vendor supplies them without surcharge.

Weight belongs in the same planning pass, because group walls multiply it. Acrylic's density is about 1.2 g/cm³,[^makeitfrom] so a 16x20-inch floating frame built from two 3mm panels carries roughly 1.5 kg of acrylic, while a 24x36 in two 4mm panels runs about 5.3 kg — per frame, before hardware. ## Installing the group: one datum line, factory-drilled holes {#standoff-install}

Standoff-mounted acrylic groups are installed off a datum line, never frame-by-frame. The method my install-savvy clients converge on: strike a laser level across the wall at the composition's center height (57 inches, or wherever the layout decided), compute every frame's four hole positions from that single datum on a printed map, drill the wall to the map, and only then bring frames out of cartons. Measuring each frame off its neighbor feels faster and fails reliably — a 2mm error per frame accumulates to a visibly sloping row by frame six.

Factory preparation is what makes the morning install possible. Frames arrive with standoff holes pre-drilled to the hardware's specification — hole positions identical across every frame of a size, because they were CNC-drilled to one program, not marked by hand. Each size ships with a paper drilling template and a stated hole-to-hole dimension, so the crew transfers holes to the wall without measuring frame faces. On a 20-frame office wall, two people finish in a morning: one laser level, one template per size, wall anchors per the wall type, and frames hung last so nothing acrylic is on the wall while drills are still out.

One sequencing note for program managers: install top rows first on multi-row layouts. Drilling above an installed frame showers dust onto its top edge and risks a dropped tool across its face; working downward keeps finished frames below the work line. Small discipline, but it is the difference between an install crew and a repair claim.
